Vape types vary from one category to another. But while not all devices have refillable tanks, cartridges, wattage controls or even power buttons, one thing they all need are coils. Coils are the heart of a vape, making them just as essential as batteries. Without coils, there’s no mechanism for the device to absorb or heat the e-liquid. That being said, not all coils are alike. They vary in size, resistance and longevity based on the device in question. Large sub-ohm tanks, for instance, can absorb huge amounts of e-liquid, function under tremendous heat and reach very low ohm resistance. Coils in smaller, simpler pen-style vapes are designed to take less punishment and absorb thinner, high-PG e-juices. Now, however, we have pod devices. Like bigger vapes and pen-style devices, pod coils are different in their own right.
There is no standard pod coil design. These vary from one brand and model to another. Some are built into single-use pre-filled cartridges, which you throw out once the pod is empty. Some refillable pod devices, however, require you to separately remove and install new coils. Pod coils are also much smaller, using short pieces of synthetic fiber, rather than organic cotton, to absorb the liquid. Since the e-liquids used in these devices aren’t very high in VG, the juice is thin enough for easy absorption.</p
Finally, pod coils last a lot longer than sub-ohm devices, since they take very little heat and wattage. While pod some coils are sub-ohm, they won’t nearly approach the low resistance of bigger vape devices.
This is where pod coils really stand out. Unlike their conventional counterparts, pod devices are designed to absorb nicotine salt (“nic salts”) e-liquids. Nic Salts e-liquids contain nicotine in a different form, mixed with benzoic acid to make it more easily absorbable by the body. Without getting too technical, this makes it possible for the liquid to carry enormous amounts of nicotine compared to conventional “freebase” products. Don’t even think about using nic salts in a sub-ohm or even a traditional vape pen, because the juice will be unbelievably harsh.
